Understand & manage

  • Pressure on the median nerve at the wrist can cause tingling or numbness, often in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger. Symptoms may be worse at night.
  • Discuss a neutral-position night splint and changes to repetitive or forceful wrist activities. Take breaks and avoid prolonged bent-wrist positions.
  • Persistent numbness, dropping objects, or thumb weakness warrants assessment. Therapy, injection, or surgery may be considered depending on severity; do not force painful nerve exercises.

When to get medical help

Sudden hand or arm weakness with facial or speech changes is not typical carpal tunnel—call 911. Seek urgent care after injury or for a cold, pale, severely painful hand.

Would a night splint help, and are nerve tests appropriate?
