Syncope / Loss of Consciousness
Evaluation of fainting, near-fainting, or unexplained loss of awareness when a neurological cause, seizure, or autonomic disorder is being considered.
Signs and symptoms to discuss with a clinician
- Recurrent fainting or near-fainting
- Loss of awareness with shaking, tongue injury, prolonged confusion, or incontinence
- Episodes during exertion or with chest pain, palpitations, or shortness of breath — seek urgent care
- Unexplained falls or blackouts
Emergency symptoms: Call 911 for sudden severe symptoms, new one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, a first or prolonged seizure, severe head injury, sudden vision loss, chest pain with fainting, or any rapidly worsening condition.
