Understand & manage

  • Tell your clinician about falls, near-falls, or fear of falling. Review medicines, vision, footwear, and the need for a walking aid.
  • Remove loose rugs and clutter; improve lighting and stair handrails. Use properly installed bathroom grab bars and nonslip footwear.
  • Ask about a balance and strength program suited to your abilities. Have a way to call for help; do not rush to stand after falling.
  • For Parkinson’s freezing, stop and regain a stable posture. Ask a therapist about turning, cueing strategies, and the right walking aid.

When to get medical help

Call 911 for serious injury, loss of consciousness, new weakness, or inability to get up safely. Head injury while taking blood thinners needs prompt medical assessment, even if you initially feel well.
